Buying Halloween costumes costing too much this year? How about some homemade alternatives instead? According to the American National Retail Federation, American adults will spend about $72 each this Halloween, which included food, candy, as well as costumes and decorations on themselves, their family and even the pets in their house.
It doesn’t take that long to add up either. Considering you MAY buy an “in-trend” costume for your child, and consider how often that costume will be worn before it is placed in the back of a closet, never to see the light of day again.
Here are a few homemade ideas to help you save money on costumes:
1. Ask friends and family if they have any costumes you can borrow. Considering how many different types of costumes that are bought, someone you know is bound to have what you are looking for.
2. Check out second had stores – They always have costumes that were abandoned or thrown out by another family that can be bought for you child, or even yourself. Generally they are in good condition and you can save a great deal of money. Failing that there is the imagination. Throw together a costume with bits and pieces that you find in the second hand store.
3. Check out sites like Ebay and craigslist for second hand costumes. You save money, the person that originally bought the costumes gets some of their money back, and you get to shop at home!
