Need a fog machine for your Halloween party? In the video by YouTube user Household Hacker you can make one for a few bucks and save yourself the money that you would have spent if you have gone to somewhere like a hire centre to get one.

All you need to make one is a large candle, an aluminum pie plate, a soda bottle top, a gallon of distilled water, and a small bottle of glycerin.

Homemade Fog Machine

To make the fog juice mix a solution of one part glycerin to three parts distilled water. Glycerin is available from your local pharmacy for a few bucks, but it’s also available on Amazon.

For the fog machine itself cut the top off a 2-liter soda bottle and tape to a small aluminum pie plate. Place this on top of a lit candle (a large one with multiple wicks is best) and add a teaspoon or so of fog juice, which should be enough to fill the room.

When you want more fog you’ll have to pour in another teaspoon of fog juice. This is less convenient than a commercial fog machine, but it is also a lot cheaper.

In this video above, filmmaker Nick Calder shares a few techniques in creative makeup including how to create realistic blood, cuts, and bruises just like in the movies.

These techniques can help you put your Halloween costume over the top.

Fake Blood

To make fake blood you will need to following items:

Corn Syrup, Red and Green food colouring, Small mixing bowl, Some Cocoa chocolate powder.

1. Put a little corn syrup in your mixing bowl and add 1-2 tablespoons of the red food coloring. Stir it up until everything is evenly mixed.
2. Add just a drop of green food coloring to the mixture. You don’t want to add more than a tiny bit because we’re not trying to make green blood, just darken and brown it up a bit. Mix it until the color is consistent.
3. Add a tiny bit of cocoa powder. Mix it in until you get the desired viscosity. You shouldn’t need much at all, but adding a little extra will make it look more like a scab when it dries.

When completed you’ll have realistic, nice tasting, fake blood!

In this video, which is part of a series on Bear makeup for Halloween, makeup expert and artist Matt Cail demonstrates how to do the base makeup, including tips and ideas.

First Matt applies a layer of dark brown to the face. What you are initially going for is a solid layer of dark brown. The areas above the eyes, about a half circle shape he will leave little to no brown there. Also the areas on the face above the laugh lines will be left with little to no brown. Everything else is going to be a dark brown.

Make sure when yo are doing this that you have a nice, consistent strong layer of base makeup. This is a pivotal stage in the creation of the Bear, so you need to make sure that there are no flashy, strange spots where you can get that drying variation. Make sure that it remains nice and constant all over the face.

The base is very important because the base color is the skin color of the character the actor will play – in this example a Bear.

In this video, which is part of a series on Halloween makeup, Matt Cail who is an artist and makeup expert provides some tips on Bear vs. werewolf makeup for Halloween costumes.

Matt says that during Halloween there is another mammal that people like to dress up as, and that is in Werewolf costumes. Which is why doing makeup for Bear costumes during this festive season can be quite challenging, because the “Wolf” is a lot more popular to dress up as.

If you are careful in the way that you do your Bear makeup, then people will think you are a wolf instead of a Bear.  There are a lot of similarities. Both types of costumes have a lot of brown in them – various shades of brown. They both have sharp teeth. Both of them are furry.

For the Bear look that Matt is showing he is going for something very intentionally different to make sure that no one mistakes your Bear for a warewolf.. The idea is to get a look of a happy, friendly, smiling Bear rather than a bloody, violent wolf.

3. Check out sites like Ebay and craigslist for second hand costumes. You save money, the person that originally bought the costumes gets some of their money back, and you get to shop at home!
